All new stories every year! Historic Old City Cemetery Museums and Arboretum will present its fourth annual Candlelight Tours. Professional actors will portray some of the Cemetery’s most poignant and captivating stories while tour guides lead you to each site by lantern.
Many people ask if the tours are scary or spooky. No, but they are a little...weird. The portrayals on the tour are of people who lived or died in sad, mysterious, unusual, or creepy ways and all of the stories we are telling are TRUE; to prove it, we invite you to come to the reception of cookies, cider, and hot chocolate afterwards to see the historical documents (letters, obituaries, newspaper accounts, pictures, etc.) backing up the stories you will hear!
The tours quickly sell out each year, so get your tickets early! Tours begin each night at 6:30 p.m., run every 20 minutes, are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Guidelines for the tours:
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your tour start time to allow for parking and check-in at the Cemetery Center. Wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and you may bring a flashlight to help see your way around the grounds, but we ask that you please do not turn it on during the tour. No video or photography allowed during the performances. The tours are not appropriate for children under the age of 8.
What some of the past Candlelight Tour attendees had to say about the event:
“Actors were vivacious and entertaining…”
“…gave me the goosebumps…”
“It was like being transported back in time. Maybe it was passing through the brick wall, and taking the long walk through the Confederate Section, but the costume, the actor’s spot on accent, the fire….it was like we had all been transported back to 1864.”
“Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the tour. There is nothing like that here in New York City.”
“This was one of the best living history events I've been to and I've been to a lot! Great writing, acting, and scene-setting!”
“…awesome! Wonderful!! I enjoyed the event so very much, especially the documentation. All the actors and actresses were very good…well spoken, compelling stories…”
