From www.dreadedblues.com: "Lorie Strother and Stephen Levine comprise Dr. Levine and The Dreaded BluesLady. We play a wide variety of acoustic blues music from the early twentieth century to today. From early artists such as Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Memphis Minnie, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, and Mississippi John Hurt to contemporary musicians such as Gaye Adegbalola, Keb' Mo, and Taj Mahal, we love it all. We also mix in R&B, Classic Rock, and other blues-inspired songs, including our originals."

Lorie can’t remember a time when she wasn’t singing because it came so naturally, but she does remember when she decided she would be a performer. It was when she received her first standing ovation after singing at a school PTA function when she was nine years old. Lorie has been performing and recording her interpretation of acoustic blues since the early 1990s. She says, "I have sung wherever I was allowed, from church fellowship halls, coffee houses and college campuses, to bars, chicken shacks and a private party by a creek." In 2012, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities awarded Lorie an apprenticeship with blues singer Gaye Adegbalola, formerly of the trio Saffire The Uppity Blues Women.

Stephen is a guitarist and also a historian at the University of Virginia, where he studies and teaches about the evolution and cultural significance of blues music in American society. Though he has played guitar since he was 11 and plays many kinds of music, he is most passionate about the blues. Whether it is the the early acoustic based styles of the 20s and 30s, such as Mississippi Delta and Piedmont blues, more recent, electric oriented styles, such as Chicago blues, or original material, Stephen loves to play it all and share his music with others. Here Stephen is pictured at a performance at the James Center in Richmond, VA, playing slide guitar on a steel-bodied National resonator guitar.

The show starts at 7:30pm, in the Rockfish Lounge.  $7/9 cover--refreshments available.
