Second Stage | Amherst is thrilled to be bringing J. Walter Hawkes and friends to our performance space, the last Sunday in April. Hawkes is a four-time Emmy Award-winning composer, trombonist and ukulele player, working in New York City for over two decades.

Hawkes has also been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts since 2009. He will be in Amherst for his sixth residency in April.
He has played and/or recorded with some people who's work you've possibly heard ... Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, Jon Hendricks, Madeleine Peyroux ... and many more you haven't (to quote Walter). It's also very possible that your children know him from music he's composed for The Wonder Pets (Nickelodeon), 3rd And Bird (Ceebies/BBC Worldwide), Oogloo & Anju (Cartoon Network), Go, Baby! (Disney Channel), and Blue's Clues (Nickelodeon) as well as other TV cartoon gems on Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel.  He is now the Musical Director, Lead Composer and Ukulele-Slinger-in-Chief of Peg + Cat, a six-time Emmy-winning animated show that teaches math concepts to pre-schoolers on PBS Kids. All of the music for that show is recorded in his studio, The Blat-O-Box. He is also the voice of the Penguin ringmaster on the Join the Circus clip, and the voice of the Arch Villain on Other Shapes. Video/sound clips can be viewed at www.blatboy.com/composing.

Hawkes will be joined by a stellar cast of musicians. Ross Martin (guitar), Doug Largent (bass) and Zsolt David (percussion) all have a reputation as exciting jazz/acoustic musicians, playing in their own bands and with numerous top flight groups around the country

Second Stage | Amherst is partially supported by
the National Endowment for the Arts, the Virginia Commission for the Arts,
the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust,  The Charlottesville Area Community Fund, the Andrew W. Easley and Anne O. Easley Charitable Trust,
and many area businesses and benefactors.
