Willum Cubbert, an ex-GI, owes a debt of gratitude to Rick Steadman, an fellow Gl who saved Willum's life. He writes to Rick, telling him that "you will have some­ body on Earth who will do anything for you". One hitch is that Willum has never met Rick, so when his 'savior'' shows up on the eve of his birthday party, Willum soon realizes that Rick Steadman is a hopeless nerd, with neither tact nor intelligence. Matters deteriorate in hilarious fashion, but disaster is averted at the end by a glorious "twist" in the plot.
