230402 RUSSELL MOORE & IIIrd TYME OUT Appomattox Bluegrass

Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out

Appearing
Sunday, April 2nd, 2023
at 2:00 pm

As a founding member of IIIRD TYME OUT, Russell has seen the group expand, and evolve, from where it started to where it has risen today. Originally from Pasadena, Texas (true home state of the ‘Whataburger’!!), he now lives near the foothills of the north Georgia mountains. Russell, born December 21, 1963, began playing music around the age of eleven after being inspired by bluegrass greats ‘The Osborne Brothers’, and joined a regional band at the age of fifteen, playing concerts and festivals in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. Around 1982, he moved to Arlington, Texas, and helped form the bluegrass band ‘Southern Connection’. After almost two years of living in Arlington, the ‘band’ moved east and settled in Asheville, North Carolina. In 1985, Russell went to work for the Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. After six years, and seven recordings with Quicksilver, Russell left to form IIIRD TYME OUT in 1991. Russell is the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) most awarded ‘Male Vocalist of the Year’ having won an unprecedented SIX times (1994, 1997, 2010 - 2012, 2018).

Yet IIIrd Tyme Out is hardly a one-man show, even with a frontman as spectacular as Moore. Wayne Benson, who joined the band over 20 years ago—just in time for the aptly titled Grandpa’s Mandolin—and stayed for nearly a decade before taking a job with the John Cowan Band, returned in 2007; his tasteful, influential approach to the mandolin is a focal point of the group’s instrumental prowess even as he continues to contribute in the vocal department. Keith McKinnon, who served memorable stints with his brother Kevin in singer Carrie Hassler’s band and in their own Still-House, holds down the banjo slot, Dustin Pyrtle, a six-year member of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and a self-proclaimed Russell Moore fan, is the bass player, and Nathan Aldridge, the youngest member of the band and formerly with Sideline is the fiddle player. All men also contribute to the group’s award-winning harmonies.
