Under the direction of Keith Lee, Dance Theatre of Lynchburg presents December Dances, a dance concert created to welcome the winter season with contrasts of darkness and illumination. “Rückertlieder,” an austere choreography set to Mahler’s world-weary score is accompanied by concert pianist, Naomi Amos and mezzo-soprano, Barbara Webb. Guest artists from the Charlottesville Ballet perform “Us,” a duet commissioned by American Ballet Theatre in 1970. “Partita de Paradise,” inspired by the French poet, writer, artist and film maker, Jean Cocteau, sets a surrealistic dreamscape enriched by Cocteau’s attachments to Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. And “Fanfare, Freedom and Fireworks,” an urban impression of Tchaikovsky’s celebrated overture, lights up the stage.
