Fall Arts Trip
National Gallery of Art
Washington, D. C.

Friday, September 26th
7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Join the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College to visit the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. to see the special exhibitions Andrew Wyeth: Looking Out, Looking In and Degas/Cassatt.

Andrew Wyeth: Looking Out, Looking In presents a select group of Wyeth’s images of windows including watercolor studies quickly executed to capture a momentary impression as well as tempera paintings created over an extended period of distillation and simplification. The exhibition reveals his extended study of windows at sites of particular interest to him, including the Olson House in Maine. The Maier Museum of Art is home to one such painting: Burning Off (1961), a watercolor
Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, c. 1879-1884, oil on canvas, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, Gift of the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation and the Regents' Major Acquisitions Fund, Smithsonian Institution. National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution / Art Resource, NY
depicting a view through a barn window where the morning fog is burning off.  The barn is part of the Olson House where Wyeth made his summer home.

Edgar Degas’ influence upon Mary Cassatt has long been acknowledged, but her role in shaping his artistic production and in preparing the way for his warm reception in America is fully examined in Degas/Cassatt for the first time. Focusing on the critical period from the late 1870s through the mid-1880s when they were most closely allied, this exhibition brings together some seventy works in a variety of media to illustrate the artistic dialogue that developed between them. Cassatt’s Sketch of Mother and Daughter Looking at Baby (ca. 1908) is a part of the collection of the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College.
